Darrell Spears

October 23, 1950 - December 17, 2024

Darrell Spears Obituary Darrell Gene Spears was born in Norman, Oklahoma on October 23, 1950 to John and Bonnie Spears. Darrell was the youngest of 5 siblings in a small house with lots of love. As the baby he was cared for not only by his loving mother and father but his older sisters who adored and protected him. Darrell was an active young boy riding his bicycle to and from Symmes street down to The University of Oklahoma where he would scalp and sell OU football tickets to make money and pay for his Boy Scout dues. He could be seen with a fishing pole in his hand or playing football. Darrell attended Norman High School and graduated in 1969. After graduation Darrell enrolled in the Army National Guard but was discharged honorably due to medical reasons. Darrell worked in the oil field in the 1980s until the boom changed the oil industry for all involved. At this same time Darrell met a gorgeous brunette one fateful night at Opie’s Bar on Lindsay St. in Norman, Vickie Holdridge walked into Darrell’s Life and never walked back out. Darrell and Vickie were married July 6, 1983 in an intimate back yard wedding with their closest family and friends. Shortly after, they gave birth to Shea Michael Spears (1984) and Hayley Jean Spears (1985). Darrell taught his children how to build a house, bait a fishing pole, make a mean tackle in football and to work hard. Darrell served on the School Board for Dale Public Schools for 10 years and worshipped the Lord at Dale Church of Christ. Later in life after retirement in 2016 from the City of Oklahoma City where he had served a long tenure as a project manager he could be found only a few places, the ball field, the gym, church or home. Darrell or Baba as his grandchildren called him attended every football, basketball, or baseball game imaginable to support his grandchildren, Cruz (12), Sloane (9) and Ruby (4). Darrell passed away after a long battle with heart failure on December 17, 2024 at Shawnee Saint Anthony’s Hospital with his wife by his side. The void Darrell has left in his family’s life will be a large and painful one temporarily, but the joy in knowing where Darrell has landed will overshadow that. While all the information about Darrell’s life is important the most important fact is that he was a follower of Jesus Christ and now lives in eternal salvation in Heaven.
