Karl was born Nov. 24, 1927, to Johannes and Jesse Malthaner. He grew up in Norman, was a star on Norman High's 1945 state basketball championship team. After military service he received a bachelor of arts in psychology from Baylor University in 1950 and a master of education from the University of Oklahoma in 1953.
At Baylor he met and fell in love with Kathryn Ann Sapp. They were wed Jan. 24, 1951, in Oklahoma City and settled in Norman.
In 1951 Karl began teaching with Norman Schools. For 17 years he taught and coached football, basketball and track at Washington Elementary, Norman Junior High and West Junior High. He loved coaching and impacting young lives.
Karl's service as a deacon at First Baptist Church and Bethel Baptist Church, where he was a charter member, was a very important part of his life.
In 1969 Karl moved into real estate and construction. Karl and Kathryn became actively involved in global missions; visiting Chile and Panama to share the love of Jesus.
They were appointed as Missionary Associates to Ghana by the Southern Baptist International Mission Board in 1985. With difficulty the decision was made to leave their growing family and follow God's calling to serve missionaries and their children and Ghanaians for ten years.
Upon retirement they returned to Norman and First Baptist Church. Karl received much joy from his family and time spent with friends. With a ready smile and a joke Karl made everyone feel welcomed and loved.
He is survived by his wife Kathryn; children, Karen D'Amboise, Denver, Col.; Marilyn and Jim Garman, Yukon; Kent and Linda Malthaner, Oklahoma City; Mark and Kathy Malthaner, Norman; and Kevin and Denise Malthaner, Oklahoma City; 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Karl left a legacy of love for God, integrity, and good sportsmanship. He will be missed.
